There was a study done a few years a go by Alex Edmans, MIT Sloan School of Management, linking employee engagement to profitability.
He analyzed the financial performance of a portfolio of stocks selected by Fortune magazine as the “Best Companies to Work for in America” from 1998 -2005. By the end of 2005, these stocks “earned average annual returns of 14 percent by the end of 2005, over double market return”.

There have been other studies which have produced similar results. These studies have now placed ‘employee engagement’ firmly on the radar of many CEOs.
My question is, when benchmarking intranets, have you done any research on the correlation between organisations with the more effective intranets and organisational performance indicators?
Paul, You mentioned third party application/content integration within intranets — how about advertising? Especially in light of what you said about intranets needing to contribute the company’s bottom line. Many intranets have the ability to push rich content to very targeted audiences within an enterprise (and naturally everyone viewing it has a job, so that’s a plus for advertisers) — have you seen any intranets with a decent advertising model?
yes ethan – BT have a great model using that i believe you have been in contect with them – sorry for delay in replying and be good to catch up
